Computer Literacy Program

The Computer Literacy Program is designed for people with little or no knowledge of computing. It is also meant for people who have some computing skills that they might have learnt on their own (informally) and want to gain formal knowledge of basic computing. 

Students are taken through the very basics of what a computer is and what it is made up of; to use the Internet effectively, to generate professional documents, making automatic computations to creating presentation documents and actually presenting them to audiences. 

This program is the beginning of every students computing life, and when this solid foundation has been build the student can then explore other computing specialties.

The Computer Literacy Program is made up of five modules: Basics of Computing, Internet and Email Concepts, Microsoft Office Word (Basic), Microsoft Office Excel (Basic) and Microsoft Office PowerPoint (Basic).

  • Summary

    This course is the first of a numerous of computing courses to be pursued by anyone interested in computing or who has found the need to acquaint him or herself with computing knowledge. The course assumes no previous knowledge of computing, and as such begins from defining what a computer is to being able to operate and utilize one efficiently.

    The course is treated in-depth and is very practical, the aim of which is to give participants a solid foundation on which other computing skills and disciplines will be built.

    Objective

    Upon completion of the course participants will:

    • Know what a computer is, what it does and its history
    • Know the types of computers available
    • Know the main components of a computer
    • Be able to connect the various cables of the various parts of the computer together, and power the computer
    • Know the types of Operating Systems and main Software that run on computers
    • Know the Windows Operating System environment
    • Be able to change basic settings of a computer
    • Know what Files and Folders are
    • Be able to Create, Edit, Copy, Move, Organize, Delete and Restore Files and Folders efficiently

    Prerequisite

    • Conversant in oral and written English

    Target

    • Persons with little or no knowledge of what computers are and how they are operated

     

  • Summary

    The emergence of the Internet has opened a whole new dimension to accessing information and communicating. The availability of information and its quick and easy access makes it almost impossible for one to do without the Internet when searching for information or communicating with friends, family and business colleagues.

    Participants will be taught what the Internet is all about, the numerous applications - such as the World Wide Web, Email and other messaging applications, and modern communication applications -  that run on it,  and how to use it efficiently. 

    Objective

    Upon completion of the course participants will:

    • Know what the Internet is and how it works
    • Have basic knowledge of what a Network is and the various types
    • Know what Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are and what they do
    • Know what the World Wide Web (WWW) is and what it is made up of
    • Know the types of web browsers and their features and how to use them
    • Know what Search Engines are and how to use them
    • Know current technologies using the power of the Internet
    • Know what Email is and how to access it
    • Know how to create an Email Account
    • Know how to create, access, receive and send Emails
    • Know how to Copy, Blind-copy and Attach files to emails

    • Introduction to Computing

    • Persons with little or no knowledge of the use of the Internet and Email
    • People who need to use the Internet and Email more efficiently for their professional or personal endeavours

     

  • Summary

    Microsoft Office Word is a document processing application used to create and edit various types of documents; including, letters, newsletter, CVs/Resumes, Reports and many others.

    The course will provide participants with the basic concepts required to produce basic professional-looking business documents.

    Objective

    Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:

    • Navigate the Microsoft Office Word environment
    • Create documents
    • Edit documents
    • Save documents
    • Format documents 
    • Use the Proofing features Create Lists
    • Set Paragraphs, Spaces, Indents and Tabs
    • Create documents using Columns
    • Create Tables in documents
    • Apply Styles and Themes to documents
    • Work with Pictures, Shapes, Text boxes, Clip Art and SmartArt
    • Modify the Layout of document pages
    • Apply Headers, Footers and Page Numbers to document pages
    • Print standard documents

    Target

    • The course is intended for persons who want to gain basic knowledge of working with Microsoft Word

     

  • Summary

    Microsoft Office Excel is a spreadsheet application used for making computations and analysis. It is very popular in industry because of its ability to make basic calculations to being used as an analytical, statistical or budgetary tool.

    This course will introduce participants to the Microsoft Office Excel environment, making basic calculations, using formulae, producing tables and charts.

    Objective

    Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:

    • Navigate the Microsoft Office Excel environment
    • Create and work with Workbooks and Worksheets
    • Add, edit, delete and format Columns, Rows and Cells
    • Input, edit and format text
    • Create simple and complex Formulae
    • Relative Referencing  Formulae
    • Create and format Tables
    • Sort, Group and Filter data
    • Work with Functions
    • Create Charts
    • Print Workbooks and Worksheets 

    Prerequisite

    • Introduction to Computing
    • Microsoft Office Word - Basic

    Target

    • This course is aimed for persons who desire to gain the basic skills and knowledge in Microsoft Office Excel to enhance their productivity in their daily tasks 

     

  • Summary

    Microsoft Office PowerPoint is a presentation application that incorporates a graphical approach to presentations in the form of slideshows, accompanying the oral delivery of topics being presented. 

    This course aims to introduce participants to the Microsoft Office PowerPoint environment, the concept of Slides, and how to add simple and creative objects to slides. 

    Objective

    Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:

    • Navigate the Microsoft Office PowerPoint environment
    • Create, modify and delete Slides
    • Insert, edit, modify and delete text on slides
    • Format text using various techniques
    • Apply Themes and Backgrounds to slides
    • Insert and modify Text Boxes, Pictures, Clip Art, Word Art, Shapes and SmartArt graphics
    • Work with Bullet and Lists
    • Indent and apply Line Spacing to text
    • Proof slides 
    • Arrange objects on slides by altering their relative position to one another
    • Add tables, and modify its rows and columns
    • Add Charts to slides, change chart styles and modify chart layouts
    • Apply transitions to slides
    • Print slides
    • Apply presentation skills
    • Deliver presentations to live audiences

    • Introduction to Computing
    • Microsoft Office Word - Basic

    Target

    • Persons interested in learning the fundamentals needed to create and modify basic presentations using Microsoft Office Power Point and present them to audiences.
